Deborah practices in the area of commercial litigation with an emphasis on disputes of complex commercial agreements. She regularly acts for major financial institutions and professional accounting firms providing advice on insolvency related litigation issues. Deborah became a partner in 2009.

REPRESENTATIVE WORK

  • Counsel to the former principal of Lakeport Brewing Corp. in the defense of a $50 million officer and director liability claim
  • Represented U.S. Steel Canada before the Federal Court in respect of a Minister's demand under the Investment Canada Act, the seeking of a confidentiality order and an intervenor motion
  • Represented the Ontario Municipal Employees Retirement System before a major municipal judicial inquiry including preparation of witness statements and submissions on standing and funding
  • Represented Oxford Developments in applications for the interpretation of commercial real estate contracts
  • Successfully defended ICI Canada at trial in an action for specific performance of an agreement for the sale of land in Georgian Bay
  • Acted on behalf of a committee of contesting bondholders in the BCE privatization, which involved the world's largest leveraged buy-out with an enterprise value of $52 billion
  • Litigation counsel to the receiver, RSM Richter Inc., in the Norshield hedge fund scandal
  • Counsel on a number of multi-party mediations and arbitrations pertaining to contractual interpretation disputes

Deborah recently spoke about applications to obtain Norwich Orders and related issues at the LSUC Continuing Professional Development Program "Mastering the Art of Complex Civil Motions." She mentors the University of Toronto Canadian Corporate/Securities Moot Team and participates in The Advocates' Society's mentoring initiatives. Deborah is also a coordinator of TGF's participation in the annual Daily Bread Food Bank Law Firm Challenge. Deborah and the TGF relay team featuring Jim Grout and Rachelle Moncur are proud first place winners of the 2006 Around the Bay Corporate Mixed Relay 30km race.

Deborah is a member of The Advocates' Society, the Canadian Bar Association and the Ontario Bar Association, Civil Litigation Section. Deborah is also a long-standing member of Gallery 44 Centre for Contemporary Photography, and a member of its Special Events Committee.
